Gateway liquor readies for expansion

(10/28) Beer, wine and liquor connoisseurs are in for a treat come December with the grand opening of a greatly expanded Gateway Liquor in Thurmont. The new store will not only play host to the widest section of foreign and domestic beer in the area, but a brand new, state-of-the-art, 860 square foot walk-in beer cooler will ensure beer lovers have a never ending supply of their favorite cold beer.

The expansion of the market, a result of the relocation of the Catoctin Church of Christ into Thurmont, will allow John and Maggie Doll, the store’s owners, to more than double the size of the liquor store. “With the move, the liquor store is going to be a larger and more upscale store.” Maggie noted.

In addition to greatly expanding their beer selection, the store will also sport a enhanced wine department, featuring the widest selection of foreign and domestic wines, along with a special section featuring wines of local wineries. “Our goal is to make this the place to shop when looking for that special wine for that special occasion.”

One of the principle advantages of the larger store is the ability it affords the Dolls to host special events for their patrons, such as beer and wine tastings. “We will be holding beer, wine and liquor tasting throughout November and December,” Maggie stated. During the week of our grand opening in December, “We will be tasting all three (beer, wine, liquor) on a given night. We’re going to taste something every night during the grand opening.”

After the grand opening, beer, wine and liquor tasting will continue on Fridays and Saturday. “Events like this will allow our customers to join us in a relaxed environment and taste test spirits they’ve looked at over the years, but have not yet tried. We hope our customers will have as much fun taking part in them as we plan on hosting them!”

The expanded liquor store will be to the right of the popular Gateway Candyland, as apposed to the present store, which is on the left, a simple 100-foot move.

The relocation will necessitate that the liquor store be closed on November 4 and 5. It will reopen in its new location on November 6, with the official grand opening schedule for December 4 through 8. To help facilitate the move, the Dolls will be offering a ten percent discount on wine and liquor from November 6 through 17. “Obliviously,” smiled Maggie, “the more we sell before the move, the easier the move.”
