The first officially published record of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church appears in The Metropolitan Catholic Almanac for 1859 as "Mechanics’ Town, Church building – attended from Mt. St. Mary’s College."  The college has a March 1828 manuscript by Fr. Simon Brute who suggested that as the college grew its priests might take care of the congregations – not only at St. Mary’s (now St. Anthony Shrine) and in Emmitsburg, but also The Furnace Church (a structure never finished at Catoctin Furnace) and at Mechanicstown (known since 1892 as Thurmont).
