St.
Agnes, Martyr, January 21, 2004 |
Agnes died
in the persecution of
Diocletian at the age of 13.
Sentenced to a house of
prostitution for being a
Christian, she maintained her
virginity and her sanctity
until her death. The acts of
her martyrdom, dating from the
fifth century, are unreliable.
Today in Rome lambs are sheared
at the Church of St. Agnes
outside its walls. The wool is
used to make the pallium, the
special collar worn during
liturgy by archbishops
throughout the world. The Latin
word for lamb, agnus, resembles
the saint’s name.
