St.
Paul of the Cross, October 20 |
|
Paul
Francis Danei, called Paul of
the Cross, reflected all his
life on the passion of Jesus.
When he was 26 Paul founded a
religious order called Barefoot
Clerks of the Cross and Passion
- the Passionists for short.
They would live the strict life
of monks but would also preach
parish missions. Missions were
something like the parish
renewal programs of our time.
During a mission, people of the
parish would participate in
processions, and they would
listen to long sermons that
might help them better their
lives.
In time
the new order became well-known
among the people of Italy for
fine preaching. Paul himself
traveled over a large area,
always speaking of the passion
of the Lord. Huge crowds of
people came to hear him. He
said to touch the hearts even
of hardened sinners and
criminals. After his preaching,
he would minister to people
through the sacrament of
reconciliation, always
stressing the mercy and love of
God.
