After marrying his wife Alicia, they moved to the charming town of Emmitsburg in April of 1997 where their first son, Marshall was born. In 2001, John's family moved to the small town of Fountain Dale, Pennsylvania, 5 miles west of Emmitsburg.  In 2004, their second child Dalton was born.

John is the Civil War Historian for the Emmitsburg Historical Society. He devotes most of his time researching the Civil War events that occurred in and around Emmitsburg. One of his main responsibilities is working with other community organizations and assisting them as much as he can. Mostly acting as a historical advisor or promoting Civil War history by holding lectures. He is a natural born writer and has written many articles pertaining to Emmitsburg's Revolutionary & Civil War heritage for the historical society to be published as part of the the new history book being produced by the Emmitsburg historical society.

John also commanded a Civil War re-enacting company called the 22nd Virginia Infantry. He served on many different staffs and also led the left wing of his battalion onto the field of many engagements. John and his family enjoy participating in re-enactments and living histories, which has taken them as far south as Georgia. He has volunteered many hours of his time at the Monocacy National Battlefield, the National Civil War Medicine Museum, C&O Canal, Antietam as well as other historical sites in Maryland and Pennsylvania. In his spare time he enjoys collecting high quality Orioles Baseball Cards, playing the guitar, hunting, shooting his bow and various firearms, fishing, and being outdoors, and of course, writing.
