Ecumenical Mission Trip to Kenya
July 2009

Movement of the Spirit

About 2 years ago members of the Emmitsburg Council of Churches discussed the possibility of developing an international connection to promote the Spirit of Christian Ecumenism.

Then in the fall of 2007, Joshua Machinga, from Kimini/Kitale Kenya came to visit Emmitsburg. Joshua gave an introduction to his work in teaching sustainable farming and providing a good education for grade school children. Joshua’s school is called Pathfinder Academy and the larger Ag training center is known as Common Ground Project (CGP).

We learned from Joshua that, although electricity is available, it is very expensive and not reliable in his area. Children need basic lighting to do their homework and do well in school, there is no refrigeration! HIV/AIDS, Malaria, Polio and other preventable diseases are on the rise in Kenya and other nations of Africa. Training in the foundations of the Christian Faith can help to develop mutual respect among Kenyans of differing churches and tribes. It was proposed that we, as a Council of Churches, develop a mission service trip to go to Kenya and serve in the name of Christ.

Our Ecumenical Team is scheduled to depart BWI on July 13, 2009, spend 10 days at the mission site and return on July 28th, 2009.
