275th Anniversary Parade and Service

Come join a parade in recognition of St. John’s Lutheran Church of Creagerstown’s 275th anniversary this year. Come to watch, or join the parade dressed in period clothing or as tradesmen and women of a century ago. Bring decorated bikes, hand-pulled wagons, antique vehicles, or just walk along and celebrate the history of the small rural community of Creagerstown, just outside of Thurmont on Rt. 550 East. Everyone is welcome to participate.

The parade will end at St. John’s, 8313 Blacks Mill Roard. Transportation from the church parking lot to parade line up area will be provided. Line-up time is 2:30 and the parade will begin at 3:00 p.m. Following the parade, a short “old-fashioned” church service will be held in the old church with a light meal in the parish house. Plans Underway for 51st Community Show

Planning for the 51st annual Thurmont & Emmitsburg Community Show is already underway. The show will be held at Catoctin High School on September 7, 8 and 9, 2007. Officers for the 2006 show are President Rodman Myers, Vice President Robert Valentine, Secretary Robert Beavan, and Assistant Secretary Jane Savage.

Other Community Show committee members include Sue Keilholtz, Jessica Valentine, Robert Wiles, Jean Myers, David Harman, Cheryl Lenhart, Alan Brauer, Sr., Jeff Geisinger, Denise Valentine, Myron Troxell, Helen and Robert Troxell, Jane and Dave Savage, Karen Myers, Sue Sanders, Patty Johnston, Laura Keilholtz, Karen Delauter, Sarah Willard, Robert Beavan and Diane Ogg.

This year the Community Show will honor honor the 50th anniversary of the Thurmont Public Library and the 100th anniversary of the Emmitsburg Public Library at their opening ceremonies on Friday, September 7 beginning at 7:00 p.m.

The committee decided that all premiums awarded will be the same as in 2007. Some minor additions and deletions will be made in some of the departments.

Community show booklets, with complete information for exhibits, can be found in local Thurmont, Emmitsburg and surrounding area businesses in late July or early August.

Local residents of all ages and abilities are encouraged to enter an exhibit. Show your talent and be a part of this annual community event. Departments include: Fresh Fruits, Fresh Vegetables, Home Products Display, Canned Fruits, Canned Vegetables, Jellies & Preserves, Pickles, Meats, Baked Products, Sewing & Needlework, Flowers and Plants, Arts, Paintings & Drawings, Crafts, Photography, Corn, Small Grains and Seeds, Eggs, Nuts, Poultry & Livestock, Dairy, Goats, Hay, Junior Department and Youth Department.

The Community Show is sponsored by the Thurmont Grange, Catoctin FFA Chapter, Catoctin FFA Alumni and the Maryland State Agricultural Fair Board.

CYA Football/Cheerleading Registration

Catoctin Youth Association (CYA) Football and Cheerleading league registration will be held Friday, May 18, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, May 19, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.;

Saturday, June 2, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and Sunday, June 3 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.; Friday, July 6, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, July 7, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Registration will be held at the Thurmont Ambulance Building. All teams will begin practices on July 21, at Thurmont Middle School.

Registration fees are cheerleading $70; football $90; and flag football $60. There is a $10 discount for each additional child in a family is $10. In addition, all families will prepay $20 for the CYA raffle tickets fundraiser. A copy of each participant’s birth certificate is need at registration.

Benefit Performance, Dinner and Silent Auction

Thurmont Thespians will present the musical “Little Sisters of Hoboken” in conjunction with a Silent Auction and Chicken Barbecue at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Thurmont on Sunday, June 10, starting at 12:30. The chicken barbecue dinner will include potatoes, baked beans, vegetable, salads, homemade breads and desserts. The silent auction will be available for bidding before, during and following the dinner and the musical will begin at 2:00 p.m. Proceeds will benefit St. John’s Lutheran Church of Thurmont and the Thurmont Thespians. St. John’s Lutheran Church is located at 15 N. Church Street, Thurmont (adjacent to the firehouse). Tickets are $10.00 for adults and $8.00 for children 5-12. Lions Club Summer Sandwich Sales

Thurmont Lions Club will resume its summer series of Super Sandwich Sales on Saturday, May 26. This is the first of five events scheduled by the club for this summer.

The Pit Beef, Pork, Turkey and Ham sandwiches will again be sold at the Bell Hill Farm, U.S. Rt. 15 just north of Thurmont from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.. Individual sandwiches or platters will be available at reasonable prices and proceeds benefit the club’s many local community service projects and activities.

The Lions Club will also host a Yard Sale from 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 26 at the same location. Items featured at the sale will be toys, plants, household and miscellaneous items. The proceeds from the sale will be designated for the Lions Campaign Sightfirst II program. This project benefits persons with vision and eye disease problems.

Fall 2007 12U Baseball Tryouts

It is time for tryouts for the U-12 baseball team in Lewistown for the Fall 2007 season. The team is looking for dedicated and experienced players born on or after 5/1/95. Sabillasville Neighborhood Crime Watch to Host Emergency/Disaster Preparedness Program Representatives of the American Red Cross, Frederick County Chapter, will present an emergency/disaster preparedness program entitled, “Be Red Cross Ready,” to members of the Neighborhood Crime Watch of Sabillasville, MD on Thursday, June 14 at 6:00 p.m. The meeting will be at the St. John’s Parish Hall on Harbaugh Rd in Sabillasville. Any interested persons living in Sabillasville and immediate surrounding rural areas are invited to attend. Emmitsburg and Washington County residents are encouraged to form a separate group. Local Girl To Attend American Idol Camp

Shayna Beard, age 15 from Thurmont, has been selected to attend the first year of American Idol Camp. Shayna is the daughter of Cyndi and Brent Greenup and Mike Beard.

Active in drama and music for many years, Shayna has been a member of the Thurmont Show Choir and performed in two musicals during her eighth grade school year. Now, at Catoctin High School, she has performed in the school’s drama productions ”Lady Macbeth Kuboki” and “American Beauty” and sings in school’s chorus.

The American Idol Camp will be help in Northfield, MA at Mount Hermon School. Experienced educators at this camp will teach a well-rounded curriculum including singing, dancing, acting, set construction, instrumental music, music video production, the audition process including personal style tips, song writing and show production.

Idol Camp will feature special celebrity guest artists, former American Idol contestants and other top professionals who will teach master classes on technique and provide lessons on the highs and lows of pursuing one’s dreams, including the audition process, performance technique and harnessing one’s talent while learning how to take rejection.

Emmitsburg Girl Wins Poster Design Contest

This April marked the 39th anniversary of the enactment of the Federal Fair Housing Law. It was a beautiful day in Annapolis and a time to celebrate youth in Maryland. Frederick County Association of Realtors selected three finalists for the Fair Housing Poster Contest. Among the finalists were Abigail Greco a seventh grader from Mother Seton School, Emmitsburg, Sydney Reaver a seventh grader from Mother Seton School, Emmitsburg, and Laura Berman a sixth grader from the Urbana Middle School. Abigail Greco from Mother Seton School was selected as a state winner.


Each year, members of the Maryland Association of REALTORS (MAR) Equal Opportunity/Cultural Diversity Committee partner with local schools to encourage and promote the understanding of equal opportunity in housing through a Poster Contest. The theme for the poster contest drawings was “Fair Housing – The Freedom to Choose in 2008.” Winners are chosen from entries submitted to MAR from local boards and associations. Thirteen winners, including one to appear on the cover, were chosen and two honorable mention posters will be featured in a colorful calendar.
