Lions Club Presents Education Awards
 and Recognitions

The annual Education Night was recently observed by the Thurmont Lions Club at a recent meeting held at the Cozy Restaurant. A number of awards were presented to students and teachers as well as to five Boy Scouts who have reached the rank of Eagle Scout.

The club annually presents awards to students who have accumulated the most volunteer hours of community service during the past school year.

The Junior Lion Award was presented to eighth grade student Amanda March who had performed 118 hours of service. Amanda received a plaque and a $250 savings bond.

The Lion Award went to two senior high school students, Warren and Carroll Zentz, who are tied with the most hours of service during the year working on a wide list of projects. Warren and Carroll received a plaque and a $500 savings bond.

The names of these three students will also be added to a plaque on permanent display at both Thurmont Middle and Catoctin High schools.

The Lions Club also presented awards to the eight nominees for the club’s annual Teacher of Year Award: James McGivern of Thurmont Elementary, Rachel Hamscher of Thurmont Primary, Linda Myers of Thurmont Middle, Gloria MacElwain and Lisa Bruck of Catoctin High, Pam Ellenberg of Sabillasville Elementary, and Paul Mock and Wanda Heurich of Lewistown Elementary. The annual Lions Club 2006 Teacher of the Year Award was presented to Rachel Hamscher, kindergarten teacher at Thurmont Primary School.


The Thurmont Lions club honored eight nominees for the annual teacher of the year award. The Lions Club also presented a donation to the principals of Thurmont Primary and Elementary, Lewistown Elementary and Sabillasville Elementary schools. The donation is to be used at the discretion of the principal to benefit the students and the school.

In other news, the club recognized three boys who recently gained Eagle Scout status in Boy Scout Troop 270 which is sponsored by the Thurmont Lions Club. New Eagle Scout members Christopher Bailey, Chris Hinten, Mike Hinten, Donald Renner, and Frederick Whalen were presented with a Certificate of Achievement and a savings bond from the Lions Club.
