On October 28, 2005, Weis Markets’ Chairman Robert F. Weis and Vice-Chairman Jonathan Weis joined local officials and members of the Thurmont Board of Commissioners for a groundbreaking ceremony celebrating the start of construction of the new
53,700-square-foot grocery story in Thurmont.
"We are thrilled to be in Thurmont. This unit will be our 24th store in Maryland. Earlier this week, we began site work for our project and by the time we are finished next summer, Thurmont will have a superstore with a comprehensive food offering and our
very latest store design. We can’t wait to get started," said Jonathan Weis, Vice-Chairman. "We are extremely appreciative of the local assistance and input we have received for our project. The review process was both thorough and professional."
"Our new store prototype offers customers tremendous one stop shopping convenience – in addition to outstanding value and variety. As a company which operates multiple stores in Frederick and Hagerstown, we feel right at home in Thurmont," said Jonathan
Weis. As a matter of fact, he said the company has been trying to build a store in Thurmont for about 20 years and is excited to see it finally come to fruition.
The Weis Markets Thurmont superstore will include a huge 500-item produce department complete with organic produce and a floral department; a large deli with a pizza kitchen, an express register, a Hoagie Shack and a sit-down eating area; a variety of
natural, organic, gourmet and ethnic items; a full-service bakery; a service seafood department; a pharmacy; and self-scan registers.
Weis Markets operates 22 stores in Maryland. In November, it will open its 23rd unit, a 44,129-squarefoot superstore in Boonsboro, Maryland.
Founded in 1912, Weis Markets, which is based in Sunbury, Maryland, operates 157 stores in six states: Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia and West Virginia. It also owns SuperPetz, a pet supply superstore with 32 units in eleven states.
The Thurmont grocery store is expected to be completed in the summer of 2006 and will be located off Thurmont Boulevard behind McDonald’s restaurant.
