Summer is flying by at a rapid pace and the Thurmont Community Show is just around the corner. This year marks the 52nd Anniversary of the Community Show. Mark your calendars now - September 5, 6, 7. I never miss the Flag Ceremony on Fiday night which features the flags of the many organizations that make
up our community. Although the Community Show has been going since 1956, the Flag Ceremony wasn’t introduced until 1976. It’s been a regular feature of the Friday night program ever since. Don’t miss this year’s special program honoring the 200th anniversary of Mount Saint Mary’s University.
It is over and gone for another year, but the 50’s and 60’s Family Fun Day was a big success as always. Terri and I enjoy it every year and it always brings back fond memories of our younger days.
August got off to a great start and my head is still spinning from the events of Saturday August 2. Terri and I were up early and enjoyed our walk down the Trolley Trail to Moser Road and arrived at the new Thurmont Regional Library just in time for the Grand Opening and the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. What a
surprise to see the United States Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps that provided music for the program. Words cannot describe the new library: beautiful, awesome, sublime and inspiring. You have to see it for yourself. It is without question the most outstanding building in Thurmont.
From the library, we went to 143 Frederick Road for the grand opening of the new Thurmont branch of the Woodsboro Bank. It was there that we caught a glimpse of Deb Spalding, Publisher of The Catoctin Banner, camera in hand, recording the action for the next issue. We are proud of you Deb. WOW, 24 pages and
no end in sight!!!
This column wouldn’t be complete without a word about the great job of Rosie and Raymond Bentz. They are doing a great job promoting Thurmont Heritage Days as the official King and Queen ambassadors of the event. The first Thurmont Heritage Days event is scheduled for May 29, 30 and 31, 2009. Heritage Days
for Thurmont was the idea of Thurmont resident, Joe Eyler. Since it surfaced about a year ago, it has caught the attention of many residents. It’s a great idea and anyone interested in helping Joe, give him a call at 301-271-2023.
Enjoy your summer while it’s here. I will be watching for you during my rovings about town.
