Luther Kugler's daily notations on life in Emmitsburg - 1917

Editors note: we recently received a package containing the daily journal of Luther Kugler - we wish we could tell you who this man was, but we can't - all we have is his notes ... notes which provide an interesting glimpse of what life was like in pre-WWI Emmitsburg.

Martin Luther Kugler was a plumber who lived in Emmitsburg from before 1900 until after 1930. He was born in Maryland on Aug 12,1891 to George Albert and Cornelia Catheina (Conner) Kugler.

In 1921 Martin Luther Kugler married Goldie M. Haugh. They had a tleast 2 children, Kenneth G. Kugler (born 1922) and Anna G. Kugler (born 1926). Martin Luther Kugler died May 7,1957 in Martinsburg, WV. He is buried in the cemetery in Emmitsburg, MD

4 Thu Ruth Topper was taken to the Frederick Hospital and operated on for appendicitis.

2 Tue Isaac Annan started to fill his ice house 6 Sat Mr. Chas Shuff was taken very sick.

7 Sun Week of Prayer started in Presbyterian Church, Mr. Cyrel (sic) Rotering & Mrs John Matthews (nee) Miss Euphemia Tyson were married in the Catholic Church Sunday

8 Mon L.K. was in shop helping to build new model 20 light generator.

9 Tue. The new 150 horse power was fired for the first time. L.K. was in shop working and down at Wagermans new garage Bob R & I were putting in sewer pipes. Wagermans new garage is being plastered inside also William Winebrenner is putting spout on it.  Chas K & John Mentzer is up at Highfield putting on a tin shingle roof have been up there a week. Partly clear & raining.

10 Wed clear L.K. was out at M.S.M. College helping to put steel up on the new building. A baby girl born to Dr & Mrs Orr

11 L.K. was out at college helping to put steel up on the new junior building. Aunt Sarah spent the night here at home. 11 Thu clear & cold

12 Fri L.K. working down at Mr. Vince Sebolds putting pipes on expansion tank.

13 Sat Mr. Culbertson and (sic) old soldier of the G.A.R. was burried (sic) out in the Presbyterian cemetery died in Baltimore. Snow & rain in eve.

14 Sun windy &. cold icey (sic) on the streets.

15 Mon snow. L.K. working in shop making troughs for Waldens

16 Tue L.K. working in shop & over at Pattersons rolling flues in boiler & down at Catholic Church S Priest House. Partly cloudy. Joe Orndorff put a pump in a well out at Geo Lingg new house. L.K. was in shop

17 Wed L.K. dawn at Priest House Bob R & I rep radiator. L.K. also out at Mahlon Sonesifers (sic) repairing wind mill.

18 Thu Mrs Correy died (in Catholic cemetery) 18 Thu Harry Want: baby died of pneumonia

19 Fri clear, L.K. working in shop & helping to repair water pipes at lower end of town Harry Wantz baby was burried  up in Mountain Vie Cemetery

30 Tue Mr. Dan Davidson died in Baltimore and was burried (sic) in Fairfield Pa.  L.K. working down at Matthews B Rider & I started to put in their bathroom.

31 Wed clear. B.R. F,. L.K. working down at Matthews 31 Wed a baby boy born to Mr. & Mrs William Agnew. Francis Matthews laid a new floor in his store.

Feb

1 Thu Mam (sic) & Papa went up to see Uncle John Kugler Windy. B.R. & L.K. working down at Matthews. .r Joe Krietz & Miss Knox of Baltimore were married

2 Fri L.K. working down at Matthews store and out at Nelson McClanies (sic) putting in bath room

3 Sat L.K. down at Dan Callahans thawing water pipes and in the shop. 2 degrees below zero.

4 Sun clear & windy at night hard windstorm.

5 Mon L.K. thawing water pipe around over town. Hard wind storm and very cold.

6 Tue Mr. Harry Gelwicks baby boy died was burried (sic) in Catholic cemetery.

7 Tue partly clear & warmer. Webb Felix & L.K. out at Nelson McClains putting in bath tub & wash stand. Webb Felix & I finished N. Mclaines (sic) bath room

8 Thu L.K. working down at Matthews in morn, and afternoon repaired pump down at the old Gilson farm. W. Felix & Warren are putting all new pipes in prof Ryans house

9 Fri L.K. working around over town. windy & cold

11 Sun clear & cold. L.K. was down on Monocacy creek skating

12 Mon zero weather. Mr. C.J. Shuff died in the morning will be hurried (sic) out in the Presbyterian cemetery. L.K. was down at Dr Orr changing water pipes.

13 Tue L.K. was working in shop soldering auto radiator & etc.

14 Wed clear & warmer. Roy Wagaman (sic) moved tc town in the house next to Wagamans (sic) garage. Elroy Ashbaugh moved out to Zora where Roy Wagaman (sic) formerly lived. L.K. working in shop and few odd jobs over town.

15 Thu L.K. was down to Harry Stonesifers in the morning to repair a pump (snow). T. Hays welded a cast iron wheel out of a gaper mill in Virginia.

16 Fri L.K. working in shop soldering auto radiator & etc. 26 Fri (snow). L.K. working in shop made smoke stack for Mr. Hahn, baker at College (clear)

19 Mon L.K. working clown on Mr. Chas Fuss wind pump in morning. (rain in afterneon). Carrie S. was very sick with indigestion Mon eve 23 Fri. L.K. in shop & around over town (rain).

21 Wed (clear) Mr. Francis Matthews & Miss Jessie Rouzer were united in marriage at the Brides home in Thurmont. L.K. in shop in morn & afternoon was out at Otte Hahn and put chimney top on chimney.

1 Thu L. K. working in shop (snow). Mamma was taken sick was in bed all day (sic).

3 Sat L.K. working in shop helping to make milk strainer buckets (cloudy). Mr. Maurice Sayler of Motters Station died was burried (sic) in Lutheran cemetery here in town.

5 Mon T. C. Hays went to Baltimore for 2 days. Clear several roofs caved in around the country from the weight of the snow. L. K. working in shop helping to make a gas machine. 6 Tue (clear) L.K. working in shop making gas machine.

6 Fri C. Kugler moved to the mountain. L.K. in shop cloudy.

7 Sat Mr. Mark Spalding, house burned down in afternoon from a coal oil stove. Carrie S. and I went to Hanover on a three days visit to Mr. & Mrs Ceo Warners.

9 Mon work was started on Taneytown road for state road 9 Mon clear & cold.

10 Tue L.K. in shop working on gas machine & etc.

11 Wed W.K. & I were out at Mr. John Bells putting in a trough and also in shop working

May

1 Tue Mr. Leslie Green died of Brights disease. Tue 1 I was down at Mr. Ern Shrivers. misting & cold. Aunt Sarah went up to Mary Kuhis Highfield to spend a few days.

Wed 2 W.K. & I were out at Mr. Amos Freezers putting spout on one side of barn 5 in spout & part of afternoon Joe C. & I were down at Motor Car Co. putting in some water pipes. clear & windy.

Thu 3 W.K. & I were out at Geo Millers rep barn roof & pumps spout. Clear, cool, & windy.  Bob R. & J.O. were up at Blue Ridge Summit setting up a range for Goulie Harbaugh.

Fri 4. B.R. & I were down at Mr. Ern Shrivers. (rain)

Sat 5. B.R. & I were working down at Wagermans Garage putting in a closet & wash stand & some water pipes. A tramp was found out along the Sisters dam was intoxicated died from exposure will be buried in Catholic cemetery.

Sun 6 cloudy & cool.

Mon 7. B.R. & I were down at Mr. Ern Shrivers (cloudy & cool)

Tue 8 working around over town rep. spout & roof down at Pres'an parish. Out at St. Anthonys rep hydrant, cloudy & cool. Dr Orr a Dentist & his wife & baby left to live in the State of Maine.

Wed 9 J.O. & I were down at Creagerstown,, putting some water pipes in a creamery.

Wed 9. Mr. James Helman died will be burried (sic) in Lutheran cemetery. (showers & cold). Warren & B. Rider were down at Mr. Ern Shrivers.

Thu 10 Mr. Chas Ashbaughs baby died will be burried (sic) in the M. View Cemetery. Working in shop & around over town (clear & windy & cold)

Fri 11 working down at Mr. Chas Landers rep closet tank & pup ;c) up some spout on Mr. Wm Sellers house 28 ft Clear & cool. Miss Helen Knouff was taken to the Hospital in Baltimore.

Mon 14. in the morning Bob Rider & I were out at Mr. Ceo Linggs & in afternoon rep spout on Catholic Church (clear & windy)

Tue 15 in the morning I was working in the shop and in the afternoon was down at Miss Harriet Motters and turned the water on & rep some water pipes. Frank Shuff & Miss Loretta Gillelan were married at the Brides home 3 P.M. by Rev Chas Reinewald. (fair). Joe O. & B. Rider were down at Silver Run.

Wed 16 working in shop in the morning making smoke stack for Creagerstown creamery and in afternoon was out at Mr. Hollingers putting up some spout on his auto shed & on barn. windy & cloudy. Big fires on the mountain very smokey.

Thu 17 working in shop all day, Ascention (sic) day (clear & warm)

Fri 18 Bob Rider & I were out at a tenant house of D. Roddy and spouted it in the morning put a closet tank in for C. Landers.

Sat 19 I was working down at the Wagermans Garage installing a water closet & some water pipes (clear & warm)

Sun 20 Showers in the morning

Mon 21 Jr. Orndorff & I were out at Fitzgeralds in the morning and layed (sic) some water pipes over to his new barn in the afternoon. I was down at the Wagermans garage putting in some water pipes.

Tue 22 working in shop rep tin ware & turning tin for roof out on new building at college and in afternoon W.K. & I rep a pump down in front of the old Zimmerman ware house (sic). Bob Rider & J.O. started to put a bath room in a bungalow for Mr. John Gelwicks Allen Moser is very ill with the measels (sic) (cloudy & cool)

Wed 23 Miss Mazie Dukehart & Mr. Fink were married in the Catholic Church at seven A.M. the Groom is from Baltimore. Bob R & I were working down at Mr. John Gelwicks bungalow (very windy & cold) During early morning a very heavy rain.

Thu 24 Bob R. & I were working down at Mr. J. Gelwicks bungaloe (sic) and in eve after work I rep fence for Mrs Nunemaker (windy & cool)

Sat 26 in the morning was working out at St Anthonys & other places. In the afternoon was working down at Mr. J. Gelwicks bungalow finished the bath room (clear & warm).

Sun 27 (clear & warm) showers & thunderstorms eve & night

Mon 28 working in shop in the morning & afternoon was down at Mr. Harry Stonesifers rep two pumps J. Hays & I. rain S. thunder gust toward evening. K H. Weant & Bill Agnew rep range boiler out at St Anthonys.

Tue 29 working in shop & around at Mr. Dick Rhodes J. Orndorff & I put in a pump in the afternoon. Bob Rider & I started to pipe Mr. Mahlon Stonesifers house for gas in afternoon

Wed 30 J. Hays & I were down at Mr. Mahlon Stonesifers putting in gas pipes. clear & warm.

Thu 31 Cyril Rotering store was robbed of some clothing

June

Fri 1 W.K. & I finished down at Mr. Mahlon Stonesifers & the rest of the afternoon was in the shop. clear S warm

Sat 2 working in shop rep tin ware & making two new tin buckets for college (clear & warm). Chas K. came down to spend Sunday with us. Walter Kugler & Miss Young were united in marriage Sat 2 John Eyler & Miss Baker were united in marriage. Recruiting officers were here three enlisted. they were also here on Tue 28 and seven enlisted.

Sun 3 clear &. windy

Mon 4 in the morning I was working in the shop & in the afternoon was working down at Mr. Dick Rhodes rep closet tank & at the Chronicle office.

Tue 5 Registration day for Army draft. I was working in the shop part of the time & I put a sink up down at John Littles & rep closet tank at Chronicle office

Sun 3 a baby girl was born to Mr. & Mrs Walter Pepler.

Tue 5 I had a tooth fixed down at Dr. Seftons. clear & warm.

Wed 6 working in shop, big thunder storm & hail doing much damage to crops

Wed 6 Bob R. & Joe O. started to pipe a house for gas down at Loys Station.

Thu 7 working in shop helping to make troughs for Waldens and put a pave wash in down at F.S.K. Matthews store showers in the morning. Mr. Fitzgerald raised his new barn.

Fri 8 working in shop & around over town.

Sat 9 putting roofing tin together all day.

Sat 9 Mr. Crouse from below Littlestown was hurried (sic) in Lutheran Cemetery. He was killed by a pair of mules running off in a roller. Bob Rider left Hayses to work in Baltimore.

Sun 10 I was in Gettysburg in the afternoon (showers) Sun 10 children day services in L. Church in the eve.

Mon 11 working in shop in the morning & in the afternoon J. Crndorff & I put a pump in down at Mr. Amos Feezers. heavy rain in eve.

Tue 12 J. Orndorff & I put a wood water tank in down at Mr. Ern Shrivers.

Wed 13 W.K. & I were down at Mr. Ern Shrivers (clear hot) Mr. Zentz died. Was buried in Taneytown.

Thu 14 I moved Mr. Chas Landers range back in the chimney & working at Thad Zimmermans & at Roterings store.

Fri 15 working down at Chas Roterings store putting a water pipe under pavement

Sat 16 working at Roterings store in the morning & in the afternoon was in the shop

Sun 17 Communion in L. Church (clear & cool).

Mon 18 J. Hays & I finished up down at Mr. Ern Shrivers Tue 19 working in shop around over town.

Tue 19 commencement at Catholic School

Wed 20 J. Orndorff & I were down at Mr. Mahlon Stonesifers & rep a pump and put up to gas fixtures, also rep a pipe over at the Gilson Farm. Commencement at M.S.M. college.

Thu 21 putting roofing tin together in the morn & in the afternoon was down at the Scrantony farm & rep a pump. Commencement at St Josephs College

Fri 22 in the morning I was out at Mrs Boss Florences & rep a cook stove also did some work down at Chas Morts. In the afternoon was around at Frank Browns & rep some water pipes

Sat 23 J Hays & I were down at Mr. Harry Knipple below Motters Station and pun (sic) in a pump 3-1/2 in cylinder, and the rest of the morning was in the shop and in the afternoon was putting some roofing tin together thunder shower in night

Sun 24 fair & hot

Mon 25 J.C. & I were down at Loys station piping Mr. Harry Kaise (sic) house for gas

Tue 26 J.C. & I were down at Loys Station. Wisoskie Bros store in Thurmont burned down.

Wed 27 working in shop in the morning & in the afternoon Warren .S I were out at Mr. Dick Rhodes mill & rep two pumps.

Thu 28 Warren & I were down at Mr. Mahlon Etonesifers & rep two pumps. Ed Rowe is putting up cement porch posts at his house

July

1 Sun Papa, Duke Frailey and Geo Winegardner & I were up to see Charles K.  Mrs Edgar Stansbury was in an auto wreck

Mon 2 installed a water meter & pave wash at the peoples garage also Jr O. & Warren put one in the motor car company. in afternoon 7.K & I were out at Mr. Fitzgeralds & laid some water pipes over to his new barn. also in eve I put smoke pipe through the ceiling to the garret. Miss Madeline Frizzel broke her ankle trying to ride a horse. Chas K bought a Ford auto second hand from the Peoples Garage $250

Tue 3 Jim Hays I moved a water radiator down at Mr. Chas Landers. Connected water to a bath tub down at Mr. Earl Heagy house. Wed 4 Firemen are having a (sic) annual picnic.

Thu 5 part of the morning I was working in shop and the rest Warren & I put a water meter on down at Jim Elders and this afternoon J.O. I were down at the E. Motor Car Co & put up a sink. Mama went up to visit Charles. Bern Peters started to lay the cement curbing on Frederick street

Fri July 6 I put a water meter down at Hotel Mondorff in the morning. also made ice cream can. in the afternoon I was up at Mrs Mitchells & rep some spigots & closet valve. Mr. William Harbaugh was killed by a binder the horse ran off down at Mr. Geo Kempers.

Eat 7 helping to connect pipes to pump down on State cement road and in afternoon working in shop and so etc.

Sun 8 Mr. William Harbaughs funeral services at the home of Mr. Geo Millers and burried (sic) at Appoldo Church. Showers today

Mon 9 W.K. & I were out at Mr. Fitzgeralds part of the morning and rep sewer pipe and the balance of the day was in the shop. made two 5 gallon cream cans & etc.. Mr. Thomas Hays was in Baltimore thunder showers in eve. Mon 9 L.K. started to paint Mrs Bentzels front porch floor. Mon 9 a baby girl born to Mr. & Mrs John Franklin.

Tue 10 working in shop making gas tank for Motor C. Company out of an old brass tank, etc.

Wed 11 working in shop on rep work. rain. Miss Mary Wagaman & Roy Gelwicks were married at 6 A.M. at the Catholic Church. Aunt Sarah is here over night.

Tue 12 Working in shop on rep work. Miss Ella Shriver was taken to St Agnes Hospital Baltimore.

Fri 13 Working in shop making cement form for work on pike. Mr. Robert Wantz was injured when his team of horses ran off in a wagon. I finished painting Mrs Bentzels porch floor.

Sat 14 Working in shop part of the morning. J. Hays & I were out at Rhodes Mill & rep a hydrant in afternoon I was down at Rev Hensleys &: rep a waiste (sic) pipe. Mr. Harry Dinterman & Miss Daisy Moser were married in Frederick.

Sun 15 rain in morning

Mon 16 in the morning Jim Hays & I were down at Mr. Birley place on the Sam Baumgardner farm and rep a pump also at Berrry Fuss and rep a pump, and in the afternoon a while I was over at A. Pattersons & rep some spigots & stove and the balance of the afternoon I was in shop

Tue 17 part of the morn I was down at V. Sebold & rep some spigots and in the shop in the afternoon Jim H & I rep some spout down at Mr. Chas Roterings store. big rain. The band serenaded Mr. & Mrs Roy Gelwicks in the eve at the Grooms home.

Wed 18 J.H. & I rep a pump & a smoke stack down at Mr. Murrey Hardmans and the balance of the afternoon I was in the shop putting tin together a big rain in eve. Just at this time it is too wet for the wheat that is cut it is beginning to sprout

Thu 19 working in shop soldered radiator 5 etc.

Fri 20 Working in shop part of the day lineing (sic) a closet tank with copper & then up at Hotel Slagle W.K. & I put in a water meter. This is the day that the draft has started for soldiers for the army. Tom Hays & Joe Orndorff are installing a gasoline curb pump at the Emmitsburg Car Company.

Sat 21 J.O. & I were down at the Motor Car Co a while in the morning working on gasoline pump & then I rep a water pipe up at Mr. Jacob Toppers. In afternoon W.K. & Jim Hays & I were down at Mr. Dan Roddys lime kiln and put on a smoke stack on his steam engine.

Sun 22 Mr. Jim McGrevey car ran down over the bank out at Tom Creek bridge on Frederick pike. Papa was up at Pen with N. Z. Hoke 8, Geo Frailey. A band of gypsies went through town in autos.

Mon 23 Jim Hays & I were down at Mr. John Gelwick (sic) bungalow and put in a wood water tank and connections.

Mon 23 Aunt Annie Waddles was here for the day.

Mon 23 a man on a bicycle was performing some great stunts on his wheel on the streets

Mon July 23 Mr. Robert Wantz died from his injuries at 11 P.M.

Tue 24 part of the morning I was down at the bungalow and finished up and then was in the shop till dinner S after dinner I was down at Mr. Ed Ohlers & rep some spigots & closet this eve I mowed Miss Harriet Matters cemetery lot.

Wed 25 In the morning W.K. & I were out at Mr. Fitzgeralds and put in some water pipes at the barn. In the afternoon I was down at Mr. Ed Ohlers & rep some spigots & closet.

Thu 26 In the morning I was at Hotel Slagle & put in some water pipes. In the afternoon Mr. Robert Wants was burned (sic) up in Mt View Cemetery In the afternoon J.O. & I installed a Jewel range in a cottage up at Monterey.

Fri 27 Working in shop in the morning & in the afternoon I repaired a closet valve down at John Rosensteels & also rep a sink at Mr. Walter Whites. in the eve I rep a bath waste & some tin ware down at Mrs Adelsbergers. Working in shop making ventilating pipe for College. Chas & Carrie were down and spent the day

Mon 30 Working in the shop a while & down at Roterings store & Miss Hallie Motters in the night I helped to put in a water meter on the line that runs to the St Joseph Academy & the railroad. did not get through until 3:30 A.M.

Tue 31 In the morning I did not work & in the afternoon I was at Hotel Slagle & connected a water pipe to the garage & barn.

August

1 Wed working in shop in the morning making cooler for creamery at Creagerstown in the afternoon was down at Mr. Meade Pattersons re some spigots & working in shop. Mr. Robert Annan sold his store to E.L. Annan & then left his wife.

Thu 2 I was sick was not working Thu or Fri. Mrs Septers died in York, was burried (sic) here in Mountain View cemetery.

Fri 3 J.C. & T.Hays started to put a gasoline pump in down at the E.M. Car Co.

Sat 4 J.C. & I finished the gasoline pump at the E.M. Car Co.

Sun 5 Chas McNair & I were in Thurmont in the afternoon to Mr. Bollingers funeral. He belonged to the I.0.0.F.

Mon 6 W.K. & I were out at Rhodes Mill rep a pump in the morning & in the afternoon I was in the shop.

Tue 7 W.K. & I were down at Mr. Jim Sheeleys & put 5 in. spout on the barn.

Wed 8 Working in shop on rep. work.

Thu 9 I was at Pen Odd Fellows reunion.

Fri 10 working in shop

Sat 11 working in shop making a dryer & etc

Sun 12 Chas & Carrie were down here in the eve.
