Service Records of Emmitsburg's War of 1812 Veterans


Samuel Barton: Private under Captain John Galt. Served from August 31 - October 27. 1814. Born on November 25, 1791. Lived in Emmitsburg during he 1850's through 187.

Joseph Boner: Private under Captain John Galt. Served from August 31 - October 27. 1814. Stated he was drafted at Emmitsburg.

Michael Burk: Private under Captain William Knox. Served from August 26 - October 27. 1814. Born in 1790 at Emmitsburg and died at Emmitsburg in 1828.

Christian Correll: Born in 1795. At enlistment he was 18 years old with dark brown hair, light blue eyes and fair complexion. 6 foot and 1 inch. Served under Captain Isaac Dern and Captain Farquhar. Drafted in Captain Isaac Dern's company and then went with Captain Farquhar into Colonel Ragan's regiment around June 1, 1814. After the Battle of Bladensburg he transferred to Captain Weaver's company and then to an Allegany County company.  Died at Bridgeport on November 6, 1875. Felix B. Taney, age 81, of Emmitsburg; remembered that Christian Correll served under Capt. Lewis Weaver. Taney visited the company while they were at Baltimore in Camp. Christian lived halfway between Emmitsburg and Taneytown. Also appeared was Samuel Barton, age 79, of Emmitsburg. In 1812 and 1814 he lived at Taneytown and was a private under Captain John Gait and remembers Captain Ward's company, Captain Creager's company, Captain Fulton's company and Captain Weaver's company.

James Cretin: Born near Mount Saint Mary's by Father Brute' in 1788. Upon entering the war was a private under Captain Galt. Enlisted into service on September 6 and was discharged on October 27, 1814. Listed as having Grey eyes and dark curly hair. Considered a spare man and a laborer. After the War of 1812 took up farming near Emmitsburg.

James Dugan: Private enlisted in the 5th U.S. Infantry. At enlistment measured 5 foot 10 inches, dark eyes, dark hair, florid complexion, age 25. Trade: Chair Maker. Born in Emmitsburg, Frederick County, Maryland. Enlisted May 27th, 1812 in Frederick by Lieutenant Clarke for 5 years. Prisoner of war, arrived at Salem from Halifax and stationed at Fort Independence. Present at Sacketts Harbor September 17, 1814. Appointed Corporal March of 1815. Deserted at Detroit June 26, 1816.

Henry Eyler: Born in 1770. Served as a private in Captain Flautt's Company enlisting on April 26 and being discharged on July 10 1813. After the war was married in Emmitsburg to Elizabeth Luckbaugh. At enrollment was a distiller 43 years of age. 6 foot and 2 inches, fair hair, blue eyes, and light complexion.

Joseph Green: Appointed as 2nd Lieutenant under Captain Samuel Ogle on May 22, 1812. Was a resident of Emmitsburg. Promoted to Captain on September 20, 1814. Assumed command of Huston's company on October 14, 1814. Served as Captain of that unit until January 10, 1815.

Henry Hann: Private under Captain Knox. Served from August 26 - October 27, 1814. Died in Emmitsburg on August 12, 1853 and is buried at St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Henry Harriet: From Emmitsburg served as a private in Captain Galt's Company. Enlisted on August 31, 1814 and was discharged on October 27, 1814. Later moved to Clear Spring, Maryland.

Isaac Hawn: Private in Captain William Knox's Company, serving from August 22 - October 27, 1814. Buried in St. Elias Lutheran Church, Emmitsburg. Stone reads died on January 14, 1844, aged 78.

David Hockensmith: Private under Samuel Ogle from May 1 - July 5, 1813. Also served as a private in Captain John Galt's Company from August 31 - October 27, 1814.

George Hockensmith: Appointed Lieutenant October 13, 1807 under Michael Sluss, 47th Regiment M.M.

John Hockensmith: Appointed as Ensign January 21, 1812 under Michael Sluss, 47th Regiment M.M.

James Hughes: Private 12th U.S. Infantry. At enlistment was 5 foot and 6 inches, grey eyes, dark hair, dark complexion, aged 23 farmer. Enlisted on March 4, 1813 at Charlestown by Lieutenant Callis for 18 months. Absent sick at Sacketts Harbor 1814. Discharged at Buffalo at expiration of enlistment. Born in Emmitsburg. Re-enlisted on April 21, 1814 at Sacketts Harbor serving with Captain Rochester of the 29th U.S. Infantry. Mustered at Plattsburg February 28th, sick in hospital and sick on April 30, 1815. Deserted from Fort Stevens on April 1, 1816. Discharged at Fort McHenry on April 21, 1819.

Caleb Knot: Priavte under Captain James F. Huston. Served from July 23-October 13, 1814.

George Lefever: Private under Captain Daniel Shawen. Served from September 5-October 27, 1814.

John Lefever: No record of service. The Carroll County Democrat reported was a veteran of the War of 1812, a native of France who was suddenly stricken by an inscrutable decree of Providence at Emmitsburg on January 3rd, 1856, while sitting on a fence.

John Paxton: Private under Captain William Knox. Served from August 26-October 27, 1814. Born in 1779 and is buried at Emmitsburg Presbyterian Cemetery. John William Paxton died May 24, 1860.

Charles Salmon: Private under Captain Henry Steiner. Served from August 25-September 27, 1814.

George Salmon: Private under Captain John Brengle. Served from August 25-September 19, 1814. Married Catherine Smith daughter of Captain Daniel Smith, a famous Revolutionary War Hero of Harbaugh's Valley. Moved to Frederick, Chair maker. Buried at Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Peter Sebold: Private under Captain Farquhar; 1st Regiment. Drafted at or near Taneytown on July 26, 1814. Discharged at Baltimore on September 30, 1814. Born around 1777-1784 in Berks County, Pennsylvania. Died on December 27, 1827 and buried at Catholic Cemetery, Taneytown. 1850 Census stated lived in Emmitsburg.

Daniel Shaffer: According to an article from the Catoctin Clarion, it stated: Daniel died on January 16, 1880, aged 88 years and 4 months. Served as a Sergeant in Captain Creager's Company raised in the Mechanicstown area commanded by Colonel Hood. After service, he volunteered as a substitute for John Smith. Fought at the Battle of Bladensburg and after the retreat transferred to Fort McHenry the night the British Vessels passed. Appointed gate keeper on the Frederick and Emmitsburg Pike.

Michael Sluss: A Captain in the 47th U.S. Infantry. Lived near the Monocacy on the Taneytown and Emmitsburg Pike. Died on July 1, 1859. Aged 74 Buried at Toms Creel Lutheran Cemetery.

Conrad Shorb: Private under Captain Knox. Served from August 26-October 27, 1814. After the War resided near Taneytown.

Benjamin Smith: Resided in Emmitsburg serving under Captain James Huston/Joseph Green's Company. Enlisted as a private and was promoted to 3rd Corporal. Length of serve July 23, 1814 - January 10, 1815.

Christian B. Smith: Enlisted in the 27th U.S. Infantry under Captain Spencer on April 18, 1814. Born at Emmitsburg stood 5 foot and 8 inches, Grey eyes, fair hair, fair complexion. aged at enlistment 27 years. Enlisted at Newark and was discharged on March 27, 1815, at Zanesville, Ohio as a Drum Major.

Felix Taney: Served as a 3rd Corporal under Captain Galt. Served from August 31-October 27, 1814. Born around 1788. Lived near Emmitsburg.

Jacob Tanner: Served as a Sergeant in the 38th U.S. Infantry. Enlistment details 5 foot and 7 inches, light or grey eyes, light hair, age 25 or 28. Occupation tailor. Born at Emmitsburg. Enlisted on June 21, 1814 by Lieutenant Martin. Discharged at Fort McHenry on March 28, 1815.

George Troxel: 2nd Lieutenant under Lieutenant Upton Reid, 1st Cavalry District. Served from August 26-September 3, 1814. Died at Emmitsburg and is buried at St. Elias Lutheran Church. 

Jacob Troxel: Private under Lieutenant Upton Reid, 1st Cavalry District. Served from August 26-September 3, 1814. Died at Emmitsburg on May 9, 1831, and is buried at St. Elias Lutheran Church. Aged 46 years, 8 months and 7 days.

Jacob Troxel: Private serving under Captain Ogle. Enlisted from May 1-July 5, 1813. Born around 1794 and lived Piney Creek outside of Taneytown.

Peter Troxel: Private serving under Lieutenant Upton Reid, 1st Cavalry District. Served from August 26-September 3, 1814. Died at Emmitsburg and is buried at St. Elias Lutheran Church. By 1850 listed as 82 years of age living with members of the Motter Family. Buried at Emmitsburg, Saint Elias Lutheran Church.

Lewis Weaver: Resident of Emmitsburg and Captain of his own company which was active July 23, 1814. Veterans claimed Weaver commanded the company at Bladensburg and later took the company to Baltimore. No further record.

Daniel Wetzel: Private under Captain William Knox. Served from August 26 - October 27. 1814. Born in 1793.

John Wetzel: Private under Captain William Knox. Served from August 26 - October 27. 1814. Born in 1794 died near Emmitsburg July of 1861.

Ralph Wharton: Private in Captain's Galt's Company. Served from August 31 - October 27. 1814. Stated he was drafted at Smith's Tavern. Born 1773. Wharton was supported by the sisterhood at Emmitsburg and was employed to keep their gate of public entrance to their institution.

John Wivel: Private under Captain John Galt. Served from August 31-October 27, 1814. Born around 1784 resided near Taneytown in 1814 and later moved to Emmitsburg in 1851.

James Yerk: Private under Captain James Huston/Green's Company. Enlisted July 23, 1814. Listed as sick October 2, 1814. Resident of Emmitsburg 1814. Later moved to Ohio.
