Emmitsburg Area War of 1812 Honor Roll

Captain John Galt’s Company

Captain Galt's Company was part of the 3rd Regiment, 2nd Division, 11th Brigade and left Emmitsburg on August 26th, 1814 where it marched to Taneytown and then on to Baltimore. Most of the men were from the Emmitsburg, Taneytown and Hampstead areas. They arrived at Camp Hampstead on August 31st and placed as reserves and in the entrenchments. Henry Green recalled the company being stationed at the Chincapin Hill entrenchments. "It rained a great deal. Mud and water were almost knee deep." Some men said the were discharged as late as November 3rd, 1814. The muster roll read, August 31st through October 27th, 1814.

According to Lieutenant Snider, Galt's Company was designated 1st Company of the 2nd Battalion commanded by Major George M. Eichelbeger, 3rd Regiment Infantry commanded by Colonel Henry Stemble. He stated that the company was mustered into service at Camp Hampstead on August 31dt, 1814. The last number in the entry is the distance from the residence to that point of the rendezvous. The beginning point would be the Taneytown area.
